This game only last into the bottom of the 5th because of rains pouring on the stadium due the nearing of Hurricane Edna into the New York area. The game was interrupted several times due to downpours and even when play was in session it was often raining. Around 12:45 a.m. (the game started at 7:55 p.m.) the umpires finally called the game and later in the night it was determined it was a complete game rather than a suspended one as it reached the bottom of the 5th with the home team winning. There was a lot of controversy of this ruling in addition to even why the game was allowed to take place with Hurricane Edna so close to the area. According to the New York Times it took Edna 17 hours to get by the area leaving behind 4:98 inches of rain and gale force winds into the city. Another game that evening --the Phillies hosting the Cubs -- was canceled due to Edna's rains.
