Shut down? I would look for any other reason. In 1984 managers usually did not "shut down" pitchers of any age.

Clemens completed 5 of his 20 starts that year, and had just finished his last two starts. The Red Sox had 40 complete games as a team, third in the league and did not miss first in complete games by much.

I think Clemens was just hurting (anyone know)?. He did recover, and pitched another 4700 innings or so.

Was Clemens shut down for the rest of the season on the walk to Thornton due to injury in the 4th? I mean this looked a possible nother 20 strike out day for him in his rookie year all of a sudden he came out? Big sox fan, thought I knew almost every thing bout them don't remember this.
