Re: Philadelphia Phillies (1950) at Philadelphia Phillies (1980) - A Back To Baseball Simulation
For all of your simulations, why is there not a complete box score?!
It would be nice to view the starting pitchers, but also the relief pitchers. How many ABs did each line-up player have?
I am actually looking for a STRAIGHT MLB simulation game that uses different World Series teams over the last 100+ years with the players complete yearly stats.
Your game is the closest, however, it does not have complete box scores in its many simulations, and maybe a stat compiler.
Thanks

The site shows the first 25 simulations out of the 5000 run. If you click on the Result, you will see the box score for that particular simulation.

Amazing that Jose Pena got the save when the Dodgers have a 15-1 lead in the 9th. One would believe that is not a save situation.
• • •
Quote from Wikipedia on Saves: As initially defined in 1969, a relief pitcher could earn a save if he entered a game with his team in the lead and he held the lead through the end of the game, regardless of the score or for how long he pitched. The definition changed in 1974.

Florida Marlins versus Cincinnati Reds - August 12, 1995
I went to the game. While driving to the game I told my son, "we are catching a ball today", During the game a Marlins player was batting right handed, we were on first base side. A line drive foul ball was hit and I caught it with my glove and I received a "Silver Mitt Award" for catching the ball. My son was 7 years old and he remembers the incident very well and he was so proud because I caught the ball and got the "award". Is there a way to find out which Marlin player hit the foul ball, who was pitching, etc.? I know it's difficult but it would be nice to complete the picture. Thanx.

Unfortunately, we do not have information on foul balls. Did you check whether the Miami Herald or another Miami newspaper reported the "Silver Mitt Award"?

Does any one have video of Mets game vs. braves 4/27/2008. My nephew passed away and leaves 3children and my nephew was at that game and caught a foul ball. Texas Rangers versus New York Yankees - April 8, 1978
Great day in Texas for a pitchers' duel featuring Ron Guidry of the reigning World Champion New York Yankees and Jon Matlack, the ex-New York Met. But poor base running by Reggie Jackson and Chris Chambliss enabled the leadoff, walk-off HR by Richie Zisk in the 9th off of Goose Gossage. Fantastic opening day drama!

This was the first baseball game I ever saw in person. My dad checked me out of school early, and we were off to see the World Champion New York Yankees against the hometown Rangers! Great game. Will never forget it.
Even though I grew up in the DFW area, I was a Yankee fan because I was left-handed, and the Yankees' best hitter and pitcher, Reggie Jackson and Ron Guidry, were left-handed. I wore 44 or 49 almost every baseball season as a kid.

New York Yankees versus Baltimore Orioles - June 21, 1966
I recall watching game 1 of this 6/21/1966 doubleheader at Yankee Stadium on TV, it's the bottom of the 9th, Orioles ahead 7-5, there's 2 out and the Yanks have 2 runners on base. Roy White hits a deep fly to right, and Frank Robinson goes back to the short bleacher wall they had back then, jumps up, the ball goes into his glove, and he falls into the stands among presumably all Yankee fans, and out of sight. Yet he gets up and emerges from the stands with the ball. The umpire calls White out, and Yanks manager Ralph Houk is livid arguing the call. But what I most remember was the call of O's longtime announcer Chuck Thompson. He first called it a catch after the ump's initial ruling, but the best thing that I distinctly recall Thompson saying during the ensuing Houk tirade, while awaiting an official ruling, "The game is over, but I'm not sure who won."
• • •
I was at that game. Robinson disappeared into the stands when he made the catch and emerged holding the ball high. Umpire ruled a catch and the fans went ballistic. When game 2 started, fans were throwing things at Robinson and the PA announcer had to insist they stop, which they eventually did. Yanks won game 2.

Milwaukee Braves versus Pittsburgh Pirates - May 26, 1959
According to the above site, Adcock hit a ball to center that Virdon could not field and got a double. I listened to the last two innings on KDKA radio and according to BobPrince the Pittsburgh announcer, Adcock hit a ball to right field but the right fielder got a glove on the ball but it fell over the chain link fence. Adcock was declared out because when Aaron reached second he believed that the ball had fallen in the field of play and he returned to the Braves dugout. Therefore, when Aaron realized his mistake and tried to return to 2nd base so Adcock could get credit for the 3 run homer, he could not do it because once the winning run crossed the plate and Aaron was passed by Adcock, the game was over. For many years, Haddix was credited with a perfect 12 inning game, but his name was removed from the list of perfrect game pitchers because a runner reached base in the 13th.
• • •
I understand why Adcock was called out for passing Aaron on the base path between 2nd and 3rd, and only credited with a double instead of a homer. But why wasn't Aaron called out for leaving the base path after rounding 2nd?

I heard this game on the radio (KMOX). I seems Matty Alou walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th inning and stole second but proceeded to circle the bases while the Dodger in- fielders stood at the mound and forgot to call time out. The division was decided by one game, the Giants nosed out the Dodgers by this one game.
• • •
I was at this game when I was 13 years old on a family trip traveling from Tampa, Florida to California and back. We stopped to watch the game. In the 10th inning, Matty Alou was walked. The infielders all met at the mound with the pitcher and catcher to plan their defense, but failed to call timeout. Alou broke for second and the pitcher spun and threw the ball to second ... but there was no one there, since the 2nd baseman and shortstop were both at the mound. Alou rounded third and beat the throw to the plate from the outfield.

It gives me great joy to see Mickey Mantle hit that grand slam again on the computer game! I was at that game, which was Old Timers Day commemorating the 25th anniversary of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.
The Daily News caption under photo of Mickey hitting this home run read, "Full House, Hearts Showing and Grand Slam for Mickey!" There is not a crowd anywhere today that can rival the crown noise that came with Bob Shepard announcing, " Now batting for the Yankees, number 7, Mickey Mantle". The crowd always cheered the loudest for him. He will always be my hero!

At that game- and seeing hero Mantle hit a home run, a grand slam none the less, (last GS of his career), was unbelievable- landed 3 rows in front of me- RF upper deck. Also remember DiMaggio hitting a legit LF double in the old timers game earlier that afternoon. Seeing Joltin' Joe and the Mick, both hitting- a yankee fan's dream. Maris was PH that day- who could ask for more- also met Mickey at his restaurant and autograph at book signing later in his life. Still consider him the best and my all time favorite Yankee.

I have been interested in watching the ML debuts for certain players, but their first game doesn't always seem to be listed. For example, the first game available for Bobby Avila is on 9/20/1949, but when he comes to the plate in that game, he is shown as having 10 AB's already that year. Ditto for Alan Ashby and others. Are the stats in error, or more likely are previous games simply not listed?

Over the years the media has tried to illustrate some of the greatest outfield web gems but have they never even mentioned the catch that Tom Tresh made in this game. While the Yankees were on there way down as a dominate force in baseball that season and for that matter over the next 11, I can't understand how no one ever mentioned this game. Game was tied and went to the 10th inning. With two outs and men on base, Chicago's Buford sent a line shot to left field that was headed for the stands. Running parallel to the old Yankee Stadium fence, Tresh at the last moment DIVED into the stands and caught what would have been a tie breaking home run to end the inning. WPIX was the broadcast station and they must have replayed that catch about 4 times that night and replayed it the following day again!!! Now anyone that knows baseball could tell you that Tresh was a very good outfielder but this catch would rival or best anything I have seen since. Especially when in the Yankees part of the

I remember listening to this game and Marty Brenneman went out of his mind. The Reds had chased the Dodgers all season long before a terrible August slump took them out of contention. The Reds were eliminated but they still found the fortitude to rally for 6 in the bottom of the 9th in a meaningless game. Pete Rose led off the inning with a hit and knocked in the winning run with his second hit of the inning. It was one of his last games in a Reds uniform before leaving for Philly. Of all the baseball games I have been to, this one stands out as one of most memorable. I was one of 35,147 in attendance and had to sit on the terrace beyond the right field fence in old Municipal Stadium. It was a Saturday and the Yankees and the A's played a twi-night doubleheader, as part of a 5-game series.
The A's won the first game 5-4, scoring in the bottom of the ninth against Yankees lefty, Whitey Ford. Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh, and Roger Maris each homered for the Yankees. I remember Maris' blast hit the top of the outer right field fence, just missing going completely out of the stadium.
The second game was won 11-7 by the Yankees when they scored 4 times in the 9th inning. Bob Turley started the game but didn't figure in the decision. Three Yankees also homered in that game--Dale Long, Bobby Richardson, and Clete Boyer.

In July there was a terrible civil disturbance and the city was a scary place all of a sudden. If there was not a riot, there would have been 55,000 at the park. People were afraid to go downtown as it was too soon after a week of looting, fires, and 44 people killed. The weather caused the Tigers to play back to back twin bills and in the second game on Saturday, their bullpen blew a four run lead, including a bonehead play by pitcher Hank Aguirre who had a chance to turn a double play on a comebacker to the mound and instead threw home for a bases loaded force out. The Angels then knocked in the go ahead and winning runs afterwards. It was a game Detroit should have won but the Angels and Bill RIgney really were geared up to spoil the Tigers chances. I remember this game like it was yesterday. It was the first time I went to Yankee Stadium. I was 10 years old. In the 10th inning I left my seat and walked to the front railing close to home plate on the first base side. I stood there and watched the game. I was as close as you can get to home plate. Nobody bothered me probably because I was so young. Here's my problem: I have a vivid memory of Tony Kubek hitting a single and being on first prior to Mantle's home run that ended the game. However all the accounts of the game have Bobby Richardson hitting the single before Mantle's homer. I was a yankee fan since the age of eight and knew the players well. Kubek batted left and Richardson right plus Kubek was taller. I certainly could not mistake one for the other. I am very puzzled by this. I can't believe my memory could be faulty since it has always been vivid in my mind since that day. Could you help?

The best thing to do is to retrieve the box score and play-by-play from baseball-reference.com. It shows that Richardson singled and Mantle homered. Kubek was removed from the game during the top of the 8th inning, most likely due to an injury.

Then I remember Bob Feller, as a reliever, striking out PH Sherman Lollar to end the game with the tying and winning runs on base. I checked out the details via the box score. With Ed Klieman pitching for the Tribe he struck the first two batters, Tommy Henrich and John Lindell, Then came the DiMaggio HR. Next Gus Niarhos singled and Billy Johnson walked. Feller came in to relieve and George McQuinn singled to load the bases. Rizzuto walked making the score 10-8. Then Lollar pinch-hit for P Red Embree and struck out. I can still see it now, the last pitch was low and away and Lollar never came close to hitting it. Lollar was a RH batter facing the RH Feller so I guess the Yankees were out of LH batters.

The first ball game I ever attended.
• • •
In the top of the sixth. Clemente hit a one-out single. Project Retrosheet incorrectly describes Stargell's hit by reporting, "Stargell hits a line drive into left field. The ball bounces into the stands for a ground rule double. Clemente moves to third." (Think about that. How could a ball bounce into the left field stands at Wrigley Field?) On the ball Stargell hit, someone opened a door that was adjacent to the left-field line, and the ball went through the doorway. The door was then closed. There was no ground rule for this situation, but the umpires ruled that Stargell had to stop at second, and Clemente would have gotten no farther than third if the door had not been opened while the ball was in play.

I was an 11 year old and "think " I remember like yesterday.
Question is, after Bressoud moves to 3d on wild pitch, don't Astros bring in infield, and Hunt's " line drive to right" really a hard hit grounder that Morgan misses after going to a knee?

He roamed around as if to get in best fielding spot at all times.Ball in 2nd game got lost in the vines in center for ground rule double.Games were typical for wrigley field was both teams hit and scored a lot of runs

Ernie Banks as a great player and an even greater human offers as an example of what can be achieved. He was given opportunity that had not been there for him until 1947 when there was change made for the good of all.The important thing was he had ability to excel,to have the ability to become the super star he was.was always the best ambassador for all!!!

I believe this was the first major league game I attended. I was too young to remember much about it but my older brother told me about the lop-sided score in later years. Interesting that Joe Nuxhall got the save when he came into the game with a 22-2 lead. Also the simulation here is inaccurate as the Reds home dugout was on the 3rd base side at Crosley Field.

For those that are serious about what saber metrics is in relation to performance in baseball by all means go to the MLB segment where Ken Hawk Harrelson is interviewed by Brian Kenney and Harold Reynolds. I ran across an interesting stat a few months ago. Matt Tupman is the last player to record a base hit in his only major league at bat. It has not happened too often only 21 times in the history of baseball dating back to 1874. And only 4 times since 1950. I found myself after clicking a link in a obscure sports memorabilia shop and ran across the actual game bat that was used for that once in a lifetime event for Matt Tupman so I bought the bat. It is signed by him also. Kinda cool I thought. Just wondered if anyone was there that day or if anyone knows where to get a video of the game.
• • •
Hi Jim,
Interesting stat you mentioned about MattTupman. I looked him up and he was a catcher for the KCR. He pinch hit in that game batting in the 6th spot and got a single. He had a nice minor league career eventually resigning with the Arizona Diamonbacks in 2009 and playing for the Mobile Baybears in the AA Southern League. You might try Rare Sports Films or google the game to get a video.

The day was July 2, 1967. The Cubs were playing the final game of a 12 game homestand of which they had already won 10. Jenkins on the mound. Cubs hadn't finished in the first division since 1946. That day they won 4-1 and for a brief time the Cubs pennant topped the National league. No fans left the stadium until the Cub Pennant was raised above St. Louis. My greatest Cub memory

Why did Dick Williams replace Whitey Herzog in the bottom of the fourth inning (after Berra made first out lining to Herzog)? In the first baseball game I ever attended, between KC and NY, Whitey Herzog came out of the game after running into the RF wall. Was this the game?
• • •
I was at the game visiting from KC. I was surprised at the number of fans rooting against the Yankees. I saw the impressive catch that Herzog made. So did New York Herald Tribune Photographer Ted Kell. A blow up of his photo has adorned the wall of Dixon's Famous Chili Parlor in Kansas City for many years. I have been searching for a print of my own which is why I am here. That home run by Joe Charboneau was into the third deck at old Yankee Stadium. This was only the Third time it was reached. Previously only JIMMIE FOXX and FRANK HOWARD had hit there. This game was my 1st game I ever saw at Yankee Stadium. I am a huge Yankee fan. I started following the Yankees in 1960. When the Pirates beat the Yankees in 7 games I cried. I was 10 yrs. old. I have followed the Yankees ever since. We had great seats right behind home plate behind the screen near the field. I still get goosebumps thinking about the 1st time I saw Yankee Stadium. I just recently found out that my wife spent 1000 dollars on these tickets. I guess she loves me. This game was also on my birthday. Even though they lost 11-0 I had a great time. My wife and I spent some time in New York City also. We had a great time sightseeing. PRICELESS!!
• • •
I need to post correction to previous statement. It was Yankees victory of 16- 3 and not 16-0 as i had stated. Pirates victories were close over yankees and Yankees were blowouts. still Pirates were the 1960 world champs so i give them credit for that.

Andy Hawkins pitched the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and the third in less than 48 hours, but lost 4-0 to the Chicago White Sox on two outfield errors in the eighth inning.
• • •
MLB later removed this from the record book as a no hitter. the reason was since White Sox were the home team they only batted for 8 innings and no hitter has to be full 9 innings. Also some other no hitters removed such as Dean Chance perfect game called after 5 innings due to rainout.

• • •
I have to correct my own comment regarding Jim Northrups 3rd plate appearance with the bases loaded- I confused this game with the June 29, 1968 game where Northrup had a a third grand slam in the same week. He had another plate appearance with the bases loaded in THAT game but he struck out. Seems like Northrup was always coming up with the bases loaded that year and most of the time, he delivered. I was 12 years old and attended the game with my stepdad sitting in the upperdeck down the 3rd baseline at the old (and nearly empty) Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Dick Donovan pitched a two hit shutout while facing the minimum of 27 batters. Whitey Herzog got two singles being doubled up on one and thrown out attempting to steal on the other. Willie Tasby broke up the scoreless game with a homer over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the 8th. Woody Held singled home an insurance run later in the the same inning. This remains the best pitched game I've ever witnessed personally in my 55+ years of following the Indians. That includes the back to back one hitters I saw Sam McDowell pitch in 1967.

I was sitting in the blue section up high and way down the left field line. In the 8th, Gene Oliver hit what looked like a lazy fly ball right down the left field line. It looked deep, but I thought the field would hold it. Tommy Davis disappeared from view and I was unable to see if he caught it or if it was fair or foul, but from the sound of the crowd, I knew it had cleared the fence. I turned to my best friend Glenn Mauer and said, "I think we're in trouble, I don't think we can beat the Giants in a playoff." I then went to the concession stand and bought a 'Crying Towel', the last one I've ever seen for sale. It had all the 62 Dodger players names on it, and there was a wooden dowel across the top and a braded golden rope to hang it from. It disappeared in one of the moves my mother made when I was in Viet Nam. For the last 10, I've been looking to replace it. I had just turned 15 years-old five days before the game. And they got ripped if they screwed up.
Seems like an oversight NOT to list them to me.

(continued) Anyway . . . A question for you: are you sure your first game was in 1948? I ask because there was more than one Eddie Mayo Day held in Yankee Stadium between 1944 and 1948. We lived just 12 miles from Yankee Stadium, and the Yankees were always glad to provide the time for visiting player "days", since it pumped up attendance by 300 or 400. Second question: since you remember that your first game was "Eddie Mayo Day", do you also remember whether he received a new car during the pre-game festivities? I have a photo of Dad standing beside the car at home plate, and would be glad to forward to you. Just contact me at edmayo33@gmail.com. Hope some of this helps you remember your first ball game. • • •
Shut down? I would look for any other reason. In 1984 managers usually did not "shut down" pitchers of any age.
Clemens completed 5 of his 20 starts that year, and had just finished his last two starts. The Red Sox had 40 complete games as a team, third in the league and did not miss first in complete games by much.
I think Clemens was just hurting (anyone know)?. He did recover, and pitched another 4700 innings or so.

I switched off the car (and its radio) just as the Yankees put 2 on with 2 out in the 7th. The radio in the store was tuned to the news station--it announced "fireworks at Fenway" and I had no idea what that meant until I got back into the car. Got home in time to watch the rest of the game on TV. Great game no matter what you thought of the result.

Spahnnie's "consecutive" no-hitters -- May 3, 1961
Of course, Johnny Vander Meer is the only MLB pitcher to have thrown consecutive. However, Warren Spahn matched that feat but for some shoddy defensive play behind him by (at best) utility-infielder turned left-fielder Mel (no-hit/no-glove) Roach. Having no-hit the SF Giants the prior Friday night, Spahn next pitched against the LA Dodgers Wed. May 3, 1961. In the top of the third inning, Jim Gilliam hit a routine flyball to left field which (in my memory at least) Roach misplayed into a double. As I recall Earl Gillespie's call on the radio, it went something like, "Roach breaks in, now goes back, comes in again... ball falls in behind him..." Scored a double since he never got a glove (never got near) it. Cost Spahn a repeat no-hitter. The recapitulation here says, "fell out of the reach of Roach."
Anyone here who remembers just what happened or knows of a narrative description of the game online?

This is also the 1st time a pitcher who threw a no-hitter went more than 9 innings.
• • •
I was 14 years old, my brother and his two buddies were 15 and 16. This was especially important since the 16 year old friend had a car and we all went to Wrigley Field for that game. My brother and I grew up in Kentucky and were staunch Reds fans and we began in the first inning saying "only 26 more for a no-hitter" just to badger our two friends. But it happened just under three hours later...the Reds won a ten inning no-hitter and we were there. My younger brother and his 10 year old son just happened to be at last night's Reds' no-hitter in Cincinnati against the Giants on July 2, 2013...this is kind of a "family thing." Great memories...!

I was at this game! My Dad took me as this was my tenth birthday. As with other games of my childhood my memory is precise and vivid! I feel I am sitting with my father in the perfect box seats his client gave him - mezzanine a few rows
.
behind the broadcast booth. $3.50!. Still have all my scorecards and yearbooks.
As if he is before me this very minute, I am awe-struck as Mantle speeds up the line in
the 11th and beats Becquer to the bag. Never had I seen anybody run so fast and never have since! Then Lopez's HR
like a golf slice, a low line drive, curls around the base of the right field flag
pole!! Thanks so much for your site and I shall search for more games as I journey back as on a tome machine back into my childhood.
• • •
I seem to remember a game where Pete Ramos hit a home run in a double header as the Senators beat the Yankees twice. As I recall Ramos challenged Mantle to a foot race before the game. It did not happen. Mantle was too valuable for such an exhibition.

My favorite sporting event of all time. Nolan struck out Reggie three times. Seat cushion night, which made for a deafening noise from the crowd.

Saw this game as a kid. I couldn't believe how hard both of these guys threw and couldn't imagine how anyone could ever get a hit off of them.
10,000 other fans tried to get tickets but were turned away. Awesome game.

THE HALLER BROTHERS MAKE HISTORY!
THE ROYALS VS. TIGERS GAME ON 7/14/72 (ROYALS WON, 1-0) WAS THE ONLY GAME IN MLB HISTORY WHERE TWO BROTHERS WERE IN THE GAME, ONE AS AN UMPIRE (BEHIND HOME PLATE) AND THE OTHER AS A PLAYER (CATCHER). BILL HALLER WAS THE UMPIRE AND HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, TOM HALLER WAS THE CATCHER FOR THE TIGERS.
BOTH WERE BORN IN LOCKPORT, ILLINOIS.
I AM TOM'S BROTHER-IN-LAW (HE AND MY SISTER, JOAN) WERE MARRIED UNTIL TOM'S PASSING IN 2004.
I AM DESPERATELY TRYING TO FIND A PHOTO, AUDIO CLIP, PROGRAM OR SOME OTHER MEMORABILIA TO VERIFY THIS RARE MOMENT IN BASEBALL.
THANK YOU AND KIND REGARDS.

New York Giants versus Brooklyn Dodgers - May 28, 1947
I believe this was the first game i ever saw. i was in the
second grade in school in ny. we were giant fans. i was not
yet seven years old. the game was a total horror show. 14-2 dodgers. five months later my father (who was a Fordham grd & recalled when Fordham was a big football power) took me to the PG to see Fordham play Penn State. (What was he thinking?) Another horror show, worse than the first. Penn State 75 Fordham 0.
• • •
Watching the game today from the vantage of 66 years,
it didn't seem so horrific. It was just one of those games.
But it was my first & I was only six & so to my child's sensibility, it was everything & it was horrible. It was like a really bad fairy tale with a deeply unhappy ending.
A year later, in 1948 came the news that the Giants had fired Mel Ott (who was one of Us & a really good guy) & replaced him with Leo Durocher who was a totally bad guy & on of them. How could they do it? My father & I sat in his 33 Dodge outside our house in Woodside. We really were devastated. It was a very hot day. My father said, "That's it. I'm not going to the Polo Grounds again." And he meant it. I was four years before I could get him to go back. It was a terribleday. Over the next few years, my father took me to games at Yankee Stadium. I never liked the Yankees, always rooted against them. It was like we were dating the wrong woman.

Brooklyn Dodgers versus St. Louis Cardinals - August 29, 1955
This was my first Dodgers game - I was 9. Dad and I sat in the lower deck along the third base line. I remember Duke Snider hitting a hsot off the base of the RF wall in the 1st inning and sliding under the tag for a triple. He later homered (although I don't remember that). A couple left handed Cards hitters also slugged HRs to the opposite field. Podres was theDodger pitcher that day..
• • •
What a great experience for you. My first game was the last game of the 1954 season Dodgers vs. Pirates at Ebbets Field.Pitcher for Brooklyn was Karl Spooner who struck out 12 Bucs. in only his second game following a 15 strikeout performance in his debut. Gil Hodges hit a towering homer late in the game for a 1-0 Dodger win. How good was that!

I live in cincinnati ohio and was having some work done on my house. One of the men working found an old stack of newspapers with some historical news. One was from the Cincinnati Post dated October 2,1919. It has the starting line up of both teams. On the Reds side it Lists Sallee as the pitcher Not fisher. the White Sox lineup List everyone except it has E.Collins at 2nd base and Williams as the pitcheron the score card.

The starting lineup for October 2 in BacktoBaseball shows the lineup consistent with your comments. Perhaps the Post was referring to the October 2nd game?

Why did McGwire start in left field for this game? And then only get one at-bat?

McGwire was on the disabled list due to knee tendonitis and when he came off it, he only batted once in each game for about 4 games. Since this was an away game, he didn't play in the field.

The Red Sox game started with Gary Waslewski walking the first two batters on a total of nine pitches and going to a 2-0 count on Paul Blair, when he was removed with a back injury. Santiago came in, ran the count to 3-2,then Blair, with the runners moving, lined into a 5-4-3 triple play, and the Red Sox responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Quite a momentum swing

Ironically it was Boone's (descended from Daniel) last game as a Yankee. He broke his ankle playing basket ball in the off season. This brought on A-Rod.
Tough to choose between Boone + Bucky Dent.

My Dad took me to the fame, my first.
We were impressed that Mantle hit his first pitch, as it appeared to us, over the left field bleachers. The only report of Mantle hitting out of the park at Griffith Stadium refer to the Chuck Stobbsgopher in 1953.
Was it an optical illusion?
• • •
The 1953 home run is one of the most famous homers of all time - one of Mantle's longest. The only way to really know about this 1956 game would be to see if you can get a Washington Post report of that game. It would probably mention it if it left the park. Thanks for your comments.

1st game of the most glorious baseball season I ever knew. Vinny named Dodger Stadium, the 'Magic Castle' the boys of summer had become men with big bats, pitching was everywhere and when we were losing it was just a set-up for more heroics. I am here to relive that season and play S-O-M while I watch in memory of my best friend who was there with me for all 112 games and was killed back in LA last year and it was doing research into that crime I found this site so I will watch, remember, and finish my aahhh...research and after the 162 it's off to my hometown and share my insights with a selected few. He would have loved this site more than myself, I think Denzel got it right when in a film called 'man on fire' he stated, 'revenge is a dish best served cold'. Thanks to you all for this work it is truly a gift to those of us who find that Major League Baseball falls somewhere between the greatest pastime and religion, as a Catholic Easter Mass and a season deciding game bring forth uni

The 1974 Dodgers were a great team. Steve Garvey is the MVP of that year. Mike Marshall wins the Cy Young Award. They had 4 starters in the All-Star Game. Andy Messersmith, Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, and Jimmy Wynn. They had a record of 102 and 60 in regular season.

While I do love this it would be great to have crowd sounds and HR celebration sounds aka fireworks for home teams (which would need to have a mute button for road games sans S-O-M(strat-o-matic does itr best) and the ultimate non TV addition would be the calling of the games not unlike radio and since the originals might be a bit pricey. A well versed articulate fan not unlike myself could give that 'old-timey radio' feel which not unlike relic-radio can be quite catchy.
• • •
First of all, thank you for your comments. We always appreciate comments from fans, particularly those who truly appreciate what we've done. We actually considered putting additional sounds in. One has to be careful in putting sounds in on the web because it can get annoying to some people. Yes the mute button would be helpful, but that would then shut off the other sounds we have there now such as the bat hitting the ball. We have experimented with voice simulation to replicate a commentator, but it sounds somewhat articial. Voice simulation is the only practical way to go since we have over 100,000 games and counting in database. We will continue to consider these suggestions. Happy baseball!!!
