Then Astros score in the 10th on Alex Bregman's walk-off single.

After coming back to tie the Series after a 3-1 deficit, the Cubs have a 6-3 lead in this 7th game going into the bottom of the 8th inning at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The Indians tie it with 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Neither team scores in the 9th, but the Cubs score 2 in the top of the 10th. The Indians manage a run in the bottom of the 10th, but lose, 8-7.
Go to Game October 27, 2011Texas RangersSt. Louis Cardinals -9-10One of the greatest World Series games ever, as the Cardinals win in the 11th inning on David Freese's solo home run. The Cardinals tie the series with this win and go on to win in 7 games. The lead changes five times during the game. St. Louis is down by 2 runs in both the 9th and 10th innings, but they score 2 runs in each inning to tie the game. The Rangers use 8 pitchers, the Cardinals 7.

The Phillies score 5 runs in the top of the 7th to put them ahead, 6 to 5. In the bottom of the 9th, Joe Carter steps to the plate, with 2 men on, and hits a 3-run walk-off home run to win the series. It's only the 2nd time a home run ends a World Series. See Home Run

Reds are leading by 6 to 3 after 7 1/2. Boston's Bernie Carbo hits a 3 run homer in bottom of 8th. Game tied. In the bottom of the 12th, Carlton Fisk's HR wins the game for the Red Sox and forces Game 7.

Pirates score 5 in 8th to take a 9-7 lead. Yanks score 2 in top of 9th to create a 9-9 game in the bottom of the 9th. Bill Mazeroski steps up to the plate and hits one of the most dramatic home runs in baseball history to give the Pirates the title.
Go to Game October 8, 1956Brooklyn DodgersNew York Yankees -0-2Don Larsen's perfect game. The Series is tied, 2 games to 2. Don Larsen, who didn't last beyond the 2nd inning in Game 2, is starting for the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He then pitches the only perfect game (the only no hitter as well) in World Series history. In fact, it's the only perfect game, and only one of two no-hitters in playoff history. He throws 97 pitches in perhaps the greatest game ever pitched. Not bad for a journeyman pitcher who's career won-lost record was 81-91.

Babe Ruth hits his 4th home run in the series to put Yankees ahead 1 to 0 in the 1st. St. Louis scores 3 runs, all unearned, in the 4th. New York gets a run in the 6th to pull the Yanks within one. With the score still 3-2 Cards in the bottom of the 9th and 2 outs, Ruth walks. With Bob Meusel at the plate, Ruth breaks for 2nd and is thrown out. Yankees lose the series.

Go to Game October 15, 1986New York MetsHouston Astros -7-6Mets make dramatic comeback in 9th inning and win in 16 innings. 7th game of 1986 ALCS. At home, the Astros take a 3 to 0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Noone scores for the next 7 innings. It's top of the 9th and the Mets score 3 to tie the game. Noone scores again until the 14th inning, when both the Mets and the Astros score a run. Neither team scores in the 15th. In the 16th, the Mets score 3 runs and the Astros threaten but manage only 2 runs. The Mets go to the World Series.
Go to Game October 12, 1986Boston Red SoxCalifornia Angels -7-6Red Sox make dramatic comeback over the Angels in game 5 of 1986 ALCS, which the Angels are leading 3 games to 1. The Red Sox, down 5-2, bottom of the 9th, 3 outs from elimination, score 4 runs on a pair of 2-run homers to take a 6 to 5 lead. The Angels tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. In the top of the 11th, the Red Sox score a run and win after the Angels do not score in the bottom of the frame. Boston goes on to take the next 2 games and a fateful trip to the World Series.

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Stan Musial of the Cardinals leads off and hits a HR to win the game for the NL. See HR

Go to Game August 22, 2007Texas RangersBaltimore Orioles -30-3The Rangers become the first team in more than 110 years to score 30 runs in a game. They do it against the Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader, getting 29 hits in the game. They win the game 30 to 3. They score 9 runs in the nightcap, winning 9 to 7. The 30 runs in a single game and the 39 runs in the doubleheader set an AL record.

He has 7 RBI's and a ML record 19 total bases, while scoring 6 times, which ties a record. He hits a 5th HR the following game to tie 2-game HR record. He hits 2 more the next day to break the 3-game record of 7, and ends the week with 9 HR's, having hit 2 two days earlier.

He has 8 consecutive strikeouts at one point in the game, and strikes out the side in the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 9th innings. The Red Sox win, 3 to 1.
Go to Game July 4, 1985New York MetsAtlanta Braves -16-13The game takes 6 hours, 10 minutes to play. The lead seasaws back and forth multiple times. It takes the Mets 19 innings to beat the Braves on July 4th in Atlanta. Relief pitcher Rick Camp, a .074 lifetime hitter, hits his first major league HR in bottom of 18th, with 2 outs and 2 strikes to tie the game. The game finally ends at 3:55 AM, the latest finish in ML history, on July 5th, after the Mets score 5 runs in the 19th inning and the Braves can only respond with 2. Final: 16 to 13
Go to Game September 30, 1984Detroit TigersNew York Yankees -2-9Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield battle for the batting crown right to the last day of the season. Mattingly had the lead by percentage points most of the way for the last week. However, on September 28th, Winfield captured the lead, and on September 29th he led by .341 to .339. On September 30th, Mattingly goes 4 for 5 and Winfield goes 1 for 4, and Mattingly wins the crown. Final stats: Mattingly.343, Winfield .340.
Go to Game May 8, 1984Milwaukee BrewersChicago White Sox -6-7The longest game ever played, 8 hours, 6 minutes, over 2 days. The game is suspended after 17 innings and continued the next day. Then each team scores 3 runs in the 17th inning. Harold Baines hits a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 25th inning, as Chicago wins, 7-6. Rudy Law, Carlton Fisk, Julio Cruz and Cecil Cooper tie the ML mark of 11 at-bats in one game. Fisk catches all 25 innings, a ML record. There were 44 players, 198 batters faced, and 43 hits in the game.
Go to Game April 13, 1984Philadelphia PhilliesMontreal Expos -1-5While playing for the Expos, Pete Rose collects his 4,000th hit with a double off Philadelphia's Jerry Koosman in the bottom of the 4th inning. He joins Ty Cobb as the only other player to reach 4,000 hits. Rose ends up with 4,256 hits in his career, making him the all-time ML career leader. See 4000th hit

A record 175 official at-bats are recorded. 6 batters in the game have 10 at bats, one batter has 11.

Go to Game September 18, 1968St. Louis CardinalsSan Francisco Giants -2-0This is the 2nd consecutive no-hitter in Candiestick Park. Ray Washburn of the Cardinals does it . He downs the Giants 2-0 after Gaylord Perry no-hits the Cardinals the day before (see just above for that game).
Go to Game September 17, 1968St. Louis CardinalsSan Francisco Giants -0-12 consecutive no-hitters are pitched at Candlestick Park, the first time this has happened in one park. Gaylord Perry of the Giants pitches the first one on September 17th. He outlasts Bob Gibson of the Cardinals, who gives up just 1 run. Ray Washburn then does the same to the Giants on behalf of the Cardinals the next day (see just below).

With 2 outs in the 23rd inning‚ Giants' pinch hitter Del Crandall delivers the winning run on a double. The game lasts 7 hours and 23 minutes, a NL record. It's in the 8th inning, and Jack Fisher is on the mound for Baltimore. Williams hits the 3rd pitch for the 521st HR of his career, 3rd only to Babe Ruth and Jimmy Foxx at the time. See HR
Go to Game June 10, 1959Cleveland IndiansBaltimore Orioles -11-8Rocky Colavito hits 4 home runs and drives in 6 runs, as the Indians beat the Orioles in Baltimore, 11 to 8. He hits the homers in 4 consecutive at bats, in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 9th innings. He walks in his only other at-bat, in the 1st inning. Billy Martin and Minnie Minoso also homer for Cleveland.
Go to Game May 26, 1959Pittsburgh PiratesMilwaukee Braves -0-1In perhaps the greatest game ever pitched, Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix pitches a perfect game into the 13th inning. However, in the bottom of the 13th, Pittsburgh's Don Hoak throws the ball away on a ground ball by Felix Mantilla. Eddie Mathews bunts Mantilla to 2nd. Henry Aaron is walked intentionally. Adcock then hits what appears to be a HR, but is called a double because Adcock passes Aaron on the basepaths and both are out. Perfect game is lost and Braves win, 1-0.

The teams split the first 2 games. It's NY's Maglie against Brooklyn's Newcombe for all the marbles at the Polo Grounds. The Dodgers score 3 runs in the 8th to take a 4-1 lead. In the 9th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd,1 out, and the score 4-2, Thomson comes up to face Ralph Branca,in on relief. The rest is history.See HR
Go to Game July 13, 1951Boston Red SoxChicago White Sox -4-5After going 17 innings in the 2nd game of a doubleheader yesterday, the two teams play another 19 innings today. Mickey McDermott pitches the first 17 innings for Boston, but Chicago wins the game, 5-4. The Red Sox score twice in the top of the 19th, but the White Sox score 3, 2 on a pinch single by Ed Stewart, to win. Red Sox 3rd baseman Vern Stephens plays the entire game without a putout.

Phillies' Robin Roberts and Dodger's Don Newcombe have each gone all the way. In the top of the 10th, in a 1-1 tie, Dick Sisler hits a 3-run HR to give the Phils the lead, and the pennant belongs to the "Whiz Kids" after Brooklyn goes down in order in their half of the inning. Re: Post #5 below, we are considering other great pennant races, including the 1964 season, not to mention the recently concluded season where 2 teams collapsed and 2 made incredible comebacks, including the Cardinals.

I am glad to see the White Sox get some love from your site, what with the 1967 AL pennant race and I feel they are well-represented in your "Great Moments." I also like that you are highlighting 1951. How about a highlight of the last 12 games of the 1964 NL season, when the Cardinals overtook the Phillies? That would be a great one. Just a friendly suggestion.

I stumbled on to this website by accident and I am stunned by the wealth of info on here. This must have taken years and years to put together. You ought to (insert tongue-in-cheek) put a warning label at the top that this site may become highly addictive!
